How to Jump Start a Car with a Dead Battery?

In the cold Calgary winters, facing a car with a dead battery is a common yet frustrating ordeal. Whether it’s due to the freezing temperatures, an old battery, or simply leaving the lights on, knowing how to jump-start a car with a dead battery. We will walk you through the step-by-step process to jump start a car with a dead battery.

What You Will Need

  1. A set of jumper cables
  2. Another vehicle with a working battery
  3. Safety gloves and goggles (optional, but recommended)

Safety First

Before you begin, ensure both cars are turned off and parked on a level surface with the parking brakes engaged. Always remember safety first – wear gloves and goggles if you have them.

Step 1: Prepare the Cars

Place both cars in Park or safe zone or Neutral with their ignitions shut off and emergency brakes on. Ensure the cars are close enough for the jumper cables to reach but not touching each other.

Step 2: Connect the Jumper Cables

  1. Attach one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  2. Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
  3. Attach one black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
  4. Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame, away from the battery.
